It was strange for me when I offered my thanks at the plenary meeting. I have shot over 2000 pigs some of which were charging me at the time and I remained cool and collected - but I could not give a vote of thanks without starting to get a bit emotional. The written word is a little easier to handle!
I found the organisation of the 4th International Wild boar Conference to be outstanding in every way. From the pre-conference contacts, to the general administration of the conference in its day to day administration. What made me so emotional when trying to thank you all in public, was the pleasure I found with dealing with you and the day to day team of supporters. Every time I went past one of you there was a smile and a feeling that you and the staff were pleased to see us. It just made me feel really appreciated and I am sure all the other delegates felt the same.
The conference itself was a fair cross section of ecological and management aspects of the wild boar and I am sure it will be well supported by a publication later on which will be a good reference for people in the field. Socially, I thought it was organised well and there was really good support from the local community. I refer to the boar on the spit and the local traditional singers, the providing of the venue, the transport assistance and all the items given to the delegates. Forgive me if I missed anything but locally the support was wonderful.
The 4th International Wild Boar Conference was a benchmark in how small conferences should be run: It was well organised, fully supported by University of Aveiro, Lousa Town Hall, Government and local Government as well as local associations. The size was manageable. If too small or too large, people do not interact adequately. and the logistics are too difficult. The location was well choosen so people stayed together for breaks and meals allowing the maximum period for interacting. After being to all the wild Boar conferences: Tolouse/Torino/Uppsala/Lousa. This last one in Portugal was the best I have attended.
Congratulations to all those involved at all levels.
Apart from the official role of the local staff involved in the day to day administration, their genuine hospitality and sincerity, made me feel very humble and feel very privledged to be present."
